Application of Sun Moon Lake Electric Boat and DC Fast Charger
In recent years, our Country has begun to promote a green energy vessel program. Some of the Sun Moon Lake vessels have been remodeled as electric tourist boats. Since the battery energy density is smaller than that of fuel oil, the batteries’ power that can be loaded on the boat is not sufficient to maintain the needs for one day in the traditional electric tourist boat operating mode, and the current average AC charging time is about 6 to 8 hours, so there is insufficient time to charge during the idle period of the day. In response to this problem, SOIC tried to develop DC fast charging system technology, to charge the electric vessels based on the electric vehicle charging mode, hoping to charge the battery power more than 80% within one hour, but the current domestic battery manufacturing technology has not been able to meet the DC fast charging capability and communication method, therefore there is a certain degree of difficulty in promotion. In order to promote usage of the DC fast charging system in electric vessels, SOIC assisted Tainan Dragon Yacht Building to build a lake tourist shuttle boat “Da Zhuang I”, which was the first commercial yacht in the country to use DC fast charging. The yacht was launched and delivered at the end of December, 2013. In addition to providing the DC fast charging control technology, SOIC assisted in the charging and discharging test of the battery pack and the CANBUS signal test of the battery management system, and assisted in the function acceptance testing of the DC fast charging station.
There are many electric propulsion vessels navigating in reservoirs, lakes, and pollution-sensitive water areas which use the fast charging technology promoted and developed by SOIC. In addition to the electric patrol boats and the lake tourist yachts of Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration, there are electric vessels navigating the Love River of Kaohsiung, Shihmen Reservoir and Feitsui Reservoir. Paired with DC fast charging technology to shorten the charging time in the future, the demand for public tourist boats and shuttle boat operators to use electric propulsion ships will also increase significantly. In addition to assisting domestic shipyards with introducing new products into the green energy environmental protection tourist boat market in the shortest period of time, the environmental pollution problems in sightseeing water areas will also be improved, to enhance the quality of recreation, increase local employment opportunities, and promote the domestic batteries and the industry chain for other electric vehicles.
