Taiwan\u2019s first hybrid power test platform, independently developed by the Ship and Ocean Industries R&D Center (SOIC), has recently passed the plan review and inspection done by Bureau Veritas (BV) from France. This platform will soon become the first domestic system to obtain the Approval in Principle (AiP) of BV hybrid notation in Taiwan.<\/p>\n

Shean-Kwang Chou, CEO of SOIC, stated that under the leadership of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, SOIC has accumulated capability and experience in DC micro-grid testing technology for ships, and currently holds a leading position in Taiwan. SOIC has also promoted electric modifications for many ferries and new shipbuilding projects in Taiwan, achieving outstanding progress, and has gradually risen to prominence internationally. In the future, it is necessary to focus on the international market of electric propulsion ships and hybrid power ships. SOIC expects that this platform will help Taiwanese industry players to connect with foreign customers, aiding the domestic shipbuilding industry to become globally renowned.<\/p>\n

CEO Shean-Kwang Chou pointed out that in May this year, the SOIC and DANFOSS cooperated in the inauguration of the Green Energy Application Development Center. The marine high-voltage DC power grid simulation facility designed and built by the Center fully adopted the advanced electric drive system products from DANFOSS\u2019s EDITRON series, while also implementing the SRPM manufactured by TECO, the dynamometer designed and manufactured by Nagaoka Machinery, the high-voltage lithium battery system designed and assembled by TY Dynamic (Taiwan Yuasa Group), and the marine electrical automation solutions developed by Jin Harng Enterprise, which are all DMIT(designed and manufactured in Taiwan) equipment and components. On top of that, they are accompanied by the high-efficiency DC bidirectional power converter with stable 750V voltage output and the power management system (PMS) developed by SOIC, maintaining the stable equilibrium of the high-voltage DC grid regardless of the load conditions. A leading domestic power electronic test system manufacturer in Taiwan has entrusted SOIC to support its analysis on the efficiency and control errors of multiple DC converters in parallel connection and current sharing, completing its functional research for OVP protection through this platform.<\/p>\n

In the future, this hybrid power test system platform will be provided to domestic and international shipyards, schools, even mechanical and electrical integrators, to conduct training courses for system integration engineering, on-site assistances and surveys, power management system development, high-voltage DC grid applications, systematic safety protection strategy research, and mechanical transmission calibration, battery system control, interface testing, and factory acceptance testing. This test system can also be used as a simulation verification for the second refitting project of the Kaohsiung Cijin Ferry in 2022, or the power system R&D and control strategy development project conducted with the Science and Technology Development Fund under DOIT of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.<\/p>\n

Yao-Fang Chang, director of BV Taiwan, remarked that BV has long been committed to the research and certification of dual-fuel-powered ships, as well as the sustainable development of the industry, including alternative energy and battery technology. This hybrid system has a high degree of integration complexity and a brand-new type of design concept. With the Approval in Principle (AiP) that complies with various pre-inspections and safety inspections for systems installed on ships, the design of the hybrid power test platform proposed by SOIC has passed various verification tests from the plan review and inspection conducted by BV, indicating that it has reached a high maturity level close to perfect. Currently, the system test platform is the first in Taiwan to pass the verification from the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).
